ForestForge(FF module)

The ForestForge (FF Module) is a multi-mission autonomous module for the Nomad NS1 robot. Beyond tree planting, it doubles as a solar panel cleaning unit and industrial inspection tool β€” equipped with a precision sprayer, soil sensors, GPS navigation, and a camera for real-time anomaly detection. Fully monitored via the Nomad NS1 web dashboard.

The ForestForge (FF Module) is a versatile, multi-mission attachment for the Nomad NS1 platform. Originally designed for autonomous tree planting and reforestation, its modular sprayer, sensor array, and camera system make it equally capable of cleaning solar panels, detecting anomalies in industrial environments, and monitoring ecological zones β€” all from a safe remote distance.

Key Capabilities

Autonomous Tree Planting

Plants trees in pre-determined grid patterns or ecologically optimised random distribution. Spacing adapts in real time using data from onboard soil sensors. The precision planting arm drills, deposits, and waters each sapling in a single pass.

Solar Panel Cleaning

The integrated sprayer system delivers a controlled water or cleaning agent jet to remove dust, sand, and debris from solar panel surfaces. Combined with the PTZ camera, the module inspects panel condition before and after cleaning β€” logging results via the Nomad NS1 dashboard. Ideal for solar farms in arid regions where manual cleaning is costly and frequent.

Industrial Anomaly Detection

Navigates industrial environments autonomously or via teleoperation, using the onboard camera to detect visual anomalies β€” corrosion, leaks, structural damage, contamination, or equipment faults. Sensor data including temperature, gas levels, and humidity is streamed live to the operator dashboard for real-time decision making.

Soil Analysis

Sensors measure soil moisture, pH level, and temperature before each planting cycle. The module selects optimal spots automatically and skips unsuitable ground, ensuring maximum sapling survival rates.

Watering System

Provides a calibrated initial watering dose to each sapling immediately after planting. The same sprayer is repurposed for solar panel cleaning β€” a single hardware system serving multiple mission profiles.

GPS Navigation

RTK-capable GPS tracks exact locations for every planting, cleaning pass, or inspection route. Full mission maps and logs are available via the Nomad NS1 dashboard for reporting and audit trails.

Remote Monitoring

Full teleoperation and live monitoring via the Nomad NS1 web dashboard. Track planting progress, cleaning coverage, anomaly alerts, sensor readings, storage levels, and GPS trails from any connected device.

Sensor Suite

  • Soil Moisture β€” Real-time hydration mapping before and after planting
  • pH Level β€” Detects soil acidity to match sapling species requirements
  • Temperature β€” Ground and ambient temperature profiling
  • Gas Sensor β€” Detects hazardous gases in industrial environments
  • GPS / RTK β€” Centimetre-level location tagging for every mission event
  • IMU β€” Terrain tilt compensation for consistent planting depth and sprayer angle
  • PTZ Camera β€” Visual inspection, anomaly detection, and mission logging

Use Cases

Reforestation Projects

Large-scale autonomous planting in deforested zones. GPS logging creates a verifiable record of every tree planted β€” critical for carbon credit validation and environmental impact reporting.

Solar Panel Cleaning and Inspection

Deploy ForestForge across solar farm arrays to clean panels and inspect for cracks, shading, soiling, or degradation. The PTZ camera captures before-and-after imagery logged per panel location, enabling data-driven maintenance scheduling and yield optimisation.

Industrial Environment Inspection

Navigate factories, warehouses, pipelines, and energy facilities to detect visual and environmental anomalies. Gas sensors, temperature probes, and the PTZ camera work together to identify faults before they become failures β€” keeping human operators out of hazardous zones.

Urban Green Spaces

Plant trees in parks and public spaces on scheduled cycles. GPS placement integrates with city planning and GIS systems for verifiable urban greening programs.

Agricultural Windbreaks

Plant shelterbelts along field perimeters to reduce wind erosion and protect crops. Soil analysis ensures correct species selection for local ground conditions.

Maintenance

  1. Regular Sensor Inspections β€” Check and clean soil, gas, and temperature probes after every 10 deployments or monthly.
  2. Sprayer System Check β€” Flush the sprayer tank and nozzles after each solar cleaning mission. Inspect for blockages before redeployment.
  3. OTA Software Updates β€” Firmware updates delivered automatically via the Nomad NS1 dashboard β€” planting algorithms, anomaly detection models, and new terrain modes.
  4. Sapling Compartment Reload β€” Reload between planting missions. The dashboard alerts when storage drops below mission requirements.

Future Enhancements

  • Advanced AI Anomaly Detection β€” Computer vision models for automated fault classification on solar panels and industrial equipment.
  • AI Planting Site Selection β€” ML models trained on satellite imagery and ecological databases for autonomous reforestation planning.
  • Enhanced Soil Analysis β€” Nitrogen content, organic matter, and compaction sensing with automatic species recommendation.
  • Expanded Sprayer Capacity β€” Larger tank for longer cleaning missions without refilling.
  • Expanded Sapling Capacity β€” High-capacity bay targeting 800+ saplings per uninterrupted mission.

Compatible With

ForestForge mounts directly on the Nomad NS1 modular rail system. Powered by the same Li-Ion battery pack, controlled via ROS 2, and monitored through the Nomad web dashboard.
